The International Ice Hockey Federation announced on Friday that they've reprimanded Russia for violating their Ethics Code.

Just after the start of their invasion of Ukraine, war propaganda was used by clubs and leagues in Russia. In their review, it was determined that the signs and billboards used to promote the war in Ukraine were not homemade and some clubs even went as far as posting images of these on their social media.

The IIHF's Ethics Board then moved the case to the IIHF's Disciplinary Board and following a review, decided that the appropriate sanction was to reprimand the Russian Ice Hockey Federation.

"The Deciding Panel also took note that there is no evidence that the teams or league took any action to limit what signs fans brought into the arenas; that it is clear from the submissions of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation that it took no action and did not advise any of the leagues or teams under its jurisdiction to ensure that any signs in the arenas or postings on team or league social media accounts did not promote or support the war; and that the analyzed postings considering the words and associated symbols did constitute propaganda promoting the war in Ukraine," the IIHF said in a statement.

They added, "Signs or billboards showing support for or promoting the war in the Ukraine have no place in an arena or in hockey and the images in this matter constitute a breach of Article 2.2.1 (Dignity) of the IIHF Ethics Code."

Following the invasion in late February, the IIHF announced that Russia, along with Belarus, were banned from participating in any sanction events or tournaments for at least one year.
