The New Jersey Devils have recalled goaltender Nico Daws from the Utica Comets of the AHL due to an injury to Vitek Vanecek.

With Mackenzie Blackwood already on the shelf, this is disconcerting news for a team riding an eight-game win streak. This feeling is all-too familiar for Devils' fans, who - last season - had to witness seven different goaltenders vie for the worst numbers in the NHL; by quite a long shot if you'll recall.
Vanecek was injured when Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot crashed into him during Thursday night's 4-3 overtime victory for the Devils. Vanecek stayed in the game a while longer before the coaching staff pulled him for precautionary reasons.
The good news - so to speak - is the the Devils' next two games are against Arizona (tonight) and Montreal (Tuesday); who rank 28th and 21st in goals-for respectively.
A tandem of Akira Schmid and Nico Daws is expected to hold things down while Vanecek, Blackwood, and Jonathan Bernier are on the mend. Both goalies have strong numbers in the AHL; Schmid a 2.54 GAA and .912 SV% in 42 starts, and Daws a 2.52 GAA and a .914 SV% in 26 starts.
Fortunately for them, the Devils rank 1st in the NHL in both expected goals-against (22.87) and shots against (260), per NST.
