The Washington Capitals announced today that head coach Peter Laviolette has entered COVID protocol and will miss the team's games against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday and Sunday. Assistant coach Kevin McCarthy will assume head coaching duties in the time being.

Beyond the weekend, the Caps have games coming up against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday, the St. Louis Blues next Thursday, and the Colorado Avalanche next Friday. Currently 6-7-2, the Capitals have stumbled out of the gate, and this loss is yet another hurdle for the veteran group.
Perhaps, it's worth noting that the Winnipeg Jets went 5-3-1 with head coach Rick Bowness in protocol and absent. The Caps are going to need a turnaround if they are going to make the playoffs, as the Metropolitan Division is tight; not unlike a Tiger.
