When the Boston Bruins announced that they were parting ways with Mitchell Miller, it felt like the conclusion of a polarizing story. However, the epilogue of that story could prove spicy in its own right.
In a recent thread, ESPN's Greg Wyshynski reports that the defenseman is still under contract with the Bruins and on paper is assigned to the Providence Bruins. Legally, the situation is dicey because they cannot just outright terminate Miller's contract without the NHLPA filing a grievance.
Wyshynski essentially lays out three options for the Bruins:
1. The Bruins could simply decide to pay Miller to stay home for this season and then buy him out at the end of the year for one-third of his NHL salary.
2.The Bruins could work with Miller, agent Eustace King and the NHLPA on a settlement that would allow him to become a free agent. While Miller is in the AHL, this would fall under NHLPA jurisdiction.
3. [If] the Bruins or the NHL sought to terminate the contract because of Miller's history, a source tells ESPN that the NHLPA would be expected to file a grievance. Same goes for any kind of multi-year suspension to essentially nullify the contract.
Lastly, Wyshynksi notes that the communication between the Bruins, the NHL, and the NHLPA has been fairly quiet so far but ought to pick up later in the week. This clearly puts the Bruins in sort of a 'rock & a hard place' situation that they brought totally unto themselves.
