It appears that the career of former Montreal Canadiens forward David Desharnais is coming to a close at the end of the 2022-23 season.

In an interview with Freiburger Nachrichten, a Swiss-based media outlet, HC Fribourg-Gotteron Head Coach Christian Dube said that Desharnais is likely headed towards retirement at the conclusion of the current season.

"He has never officially told me, but it is probably going in that direction," Dube said.

Desharnais, 36, appeared in 524 career games in the National Hockey League for Montreal, Edmonton and the New York Rangers. In those 524 games, he had 282 points (87 goals, 195 assists), 160 penalty minutes and was a plus-13.

After the 2017-18 season, Desharnais decided to head overseas and signed a one-year contract with the KHL's Avangard Omsk. After a fairly good season with Omsk, he moved to Switzerland and signed a contract with HC Fribourg-Gotteron, where he's spent the last four years.

With the NHL not participating at the 2022 Winter Olympics, Desharnais was named to Canada's roster and was made an alternate captain for the tournament. In five games, the Laurier-Station (Quebec) native had one assist as Canada bounced out of the tournament in the quarter-finals following a loss to Sweden.

If this is the end of the road for Desharnais, congratulations on a strong career both in North America and Europe.
