The Vancouver Canucks announced on Thursday evening that they have re-signed longtime defenseman Kevin Bieksa to a one-day contract to ensure he can retire as a member of their organization.

Despite not having played since the 2017-18 season, Bieksa never formally retired from the NHL, but appears to be doing so now. The 41-year-old had an outstanding career, suiting up for 808 career games while putting up 63 goals, 215 points and 1124 penalty minutes. The first 597 of those games came with the Canucks, while the final 211 came as a member of the Anaheim Ducks.
Since stepping away from the game, Bieksa has had a newfound success as an analyst with Hockey Night in Canada. After having many fans throughout the league dislike him as a player due to his rugged style, he is seemingly enjoyed by almost anyone tuning into a game on any given basis. As solid as his playing career was, it can be argued that he is doing even better in his new gig.
