New York Islanders forward Mat Barzal is entering the final year of a three-year deal and will become an RFA next summer. But the 25-year-old told the media on the opening day of training camp that he's hoping to work out an extension with the Islanders before the new season begins.

"There's still (three) weeks before the season, and we can (hopefully) hammer something out," Barzal said. "If not, I'm not really worried about it just because my heart's here, and I know that we'll get something fair and something both sides will be happy about."

The Coquitlam (British Columbia) native is set to make $7 million this season and there's a pretty good chance the AAV on his next contract will be something in the $8.5-$9 million range. The Islanders are set to have $21,275,000 in cap space next summer, according to CapFriendly. But Barzal isn't the only player the Isles will need to sign, as Kieffer Bellows, Oliver Wahlstrom and Semyon Varlamov are set to be out of contract after the season.

In 73 games last season, Barzal tallied 59 points (15 goals, 44 assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a minus-15.
