Kurtis Gabriel, one of the lone remaining 'enforcers' in around the NHL, announced his retirement from pro hockey today, saying his body just cannot continue to play.
Gabriel writes, "This is definitely not an easy decision, but I feel like I need to listen to my body, my heart, and my mind, and they are telling me it is time to retire from playing professional hockey."
In 51 NHL games, Gabriel managed five points and 153 penalty minutes, which is a rare stat line these days. Drafted in the third round in 2013 by Minnesota, Gabriel played for the Wild, the New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, and most recently the Chicago Blackhawks.
As far as his personal life, Gabriel is dating Instagram influencer and model Mikayla Demaiter, and he is very active on social media himself, advocating for a range of social issues. Best of luck in retirement, Mr. Gabriel.
