As first reported by Andrew Gross, the New York Islanders have hired former defenseman Johnny Boychuk in a player development role.

Gross went on to mention that Boychuk, 38, has been skating as part of the coaching staff for the Islanders development camp this past week. The Edmonton, Alberta native last appeared in the NHL back in 2019-20, a season in which he suffered a career ending eye injury. At the time he had recorded 11 points on the year.

During his prime, Boychuk was a steady top four defenseman known for his booming shot from the point, one in which earned him the nickname Johnny Rocket. He suited up for a total of 725 games throughout his career, split almost entirely between the Boston Bruins and Islanders. Over those 725 contests he put up 54 goals and 206 points.
