When Nick Suzuki began his NHL career in 2019, he had a lot of help with teammate Phillip Danault taking him under his wing and showing him the ropes on how to be a solid two-way center in the league.

Danault and Suzuki formed a pretty good one-two punch down the middle for the Canadiens during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, before Danault left Montreal in the Summer of 2021, signing a six-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings.

In his first season without Danault, Suzuki took his game to another level and continued to show maturity, consistency and grew into a leadership role, wearing an 'A' for the Canadiens at times during the year.

With him growing into a leader on the team, the Canadiens made Suzuki the 31st captain in franchise history prior to their annual golf tournament on September 19th.

While at the NHL/NHLPA media tour in Las Vegas, Danault told Joshua Clipperton of The Canadian Press that he is proud of Suzuki and that he's the right fit to be the captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

"Very proud of him. He deserves it. He's very serious at what he does, and I don't think it could be a better fit than Nick, to be honest. When I was there, I kind of took him under my wings when he was a rookie. You could tell he already had an edge to be a big leader. I like the move from Montreal, and I respect that. He's gonna do an awesome job," Danault said.

Danault and Suzuki will go head-to-head twice this season, with the first meeting coming on December 10th at the Bell Centre in Montreal.
