As was previously known, the National Hockey League along with the Players Association and the IIHF are planning to hold the next edition of the World Cup of Hockey in February 2024.

In an interview with DailyFaceoff, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said that while nothing is finalized, talks with the NHLPA and IIHF are on-going. Some of the details regarding the tournament are still being worked on, but it Daly said that the 2024 World Cup of Hockey will feature eight national teams, meaning Team North America and Team Europe won't be returning.

Six nations will be given automatic spots in the tournament with two additional nations needing to go through a play-in qualifying round. The number of teams participating in that qualifying round has yet to be determined.

"That's what's currently being thought about," Daly told Daily Faceoff. "We're going to make the World Cup a regular property. So 2028, 2032. Longer term, we want that qualifying round to engage a number of different hockey countries and perhaps be played in the fall. We think we're too late in the planning process this time around to do it in fall of 2023. So if we did it we'd move it to the front end of the tournament, probably do it in conjunction with the tournament itself. But again, these are all ideas at this point, nothing finalized."

Russia's participation in the tournament is not guaranteed, given their invasion of Ukraine, along with their ban from the International Ice Hockey Federation. There's still a long way to go before their hoping to host the tournament, but a decision would have to be made relatively soon, as in the next six months, if Russia will be banned from participating in order to finalize the nations playing in the tournament, as well as the qualifying round nations.

The last World Cup of Hockey was held solely in Toronto at Scotiabank Arena in 2016, with Canada defeating Team Europe in the best-of-three final series.
