In recent days, it has been apparent that the Calgary Flames and MacKenzie Weegar are working towards a contract extension, and according to one highly credible insider, that extension could be a very pricey one.

Speaking on this 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman spoke on what he is hearing in regards to the extension talks between the two parties. From the sounds of things, it could be a deal very similar to what Hampus Lindholm signed for last season with the Boston Bruins.

"I have a feeling that something is gonna be around Hampus Lindholm's extension in Boston," Friedman said. "If you look at when Lindholm was traded from the Ducks to the Bruins, he signed for eight years at $6.5 million. I think that's kind of the general area the Flames and Weegar are looking at here."

Over the past two seasons, Weegar's stock has increased dramatically. Playing on what was a loaded Florida Panthers lineup, he has been able to record 80 points over his past 134 games. That said, his defensive play at times can be questioned, and it remains to be seen how he will produce on a team more defensively styled with Darryl Sutter behind the bench. $6.5 million per year seems like quite a bit of money, but it's tough to question general manager Brad Treliving after what he was able to accomplish this summer.
