Amidst the ongoing allegations facing Canada's 2003 and 2018 World Junior teams, Hockey Canada's board of governors recently offered their public confidence in sitting CEO Scott Smith. Naturally, that did not sit well with the overwhelming number of people calling for sweeping changes to the organization's leadership, citing the paradox of evolving from the 'old' culture under the same leadership of the past.

When asked about his response to the board's decision to support Smith, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took the podium yesterday and called for changes to Hockey Canada's leadership, saying that the Canadian people and the government have lost confidence in the organization:

With so many grand issues facing the country and the world, for that matter -- inflation, COVID, energy, etc. -- sexual assault within a sports organization might not seem overly pressing, but this is a basic human rights discussion involving Canada's national sport. Trudeau, like many world leaders, receives tons of criticism, and truthfully I don't blame Canadians for having issues with their leadership and holding him accountable. Leadership worldwide has not been up to par over the last couple of decades. But he is correct here, if Hockey Canada is interested in making true, lasting change, they cannot advance with the same leadership under whom the above indiscretions took place. It almost makes me wonder if there is more beneath the surface they don't want dug up...
