After Jokerit Helsinki left the KHL in the spring, there has been plenty of speculation on what their next steps may be. At the time of their withdraw from the Russian-based league, Hockey Hall of Famer Jari Kurri owned 60% of the team, with the other 40% being owned by the firm of a Russian oligarch named Vladimir Potanin. In April, Kurri purchased the 40% from Potanin to become the full owner.

Hockey Hall of Famer and former Jokerit Helsinki forward Teemu Selanne announced several months ago that he was putting together a group to purchase the team, but on Sunday, he wrote in a social media post that his bid to become owner has failed.

Note: the following is translated from Finnish

"We have been working over the summer to build a future alternative for Jokers based on a communal, open and transparent way of working. Our goal has been to enable long-term and stable support for the junior activities under the responsibility of Helsingin Jokerit ry, as well as a commitment to professionally managed representative hockey in the domestic league, which relies on the player's own path and starts from a clean slate." said Selanne.

He added, "The Jokerit project is over for us at this point. In March, we started building a dream team, the purpose of which was to bring the Jokers back to the top of Finnish ice hockey. This time, unfortunately, we did not reach an agreement with Jokerit ry."

Jokerit Helsinki left Finland's top division, Liiga, in 2014 to join the KHL. The current plan is for them to not field a men's team during the 2022-23 season and if all goes well, return to Liiga for the 2023-24 season.
