The Carolina Hurricanes announced today they have signed F Martin Necas to a two-year, $6 million contract extension:

The Hurricanes drafted Necas 12th overall in 2017, and the Czech forward has rewarded them with 119 points in 203 NHL games, including 14 points in 33 playoff games.

Necas, 23, is a pass-first middle-six winger with middling playdriving ability that leaves a bit to be desired. Generally, he is productive on special teams and scores at a decent rate at 5v5, but no question Hurricanes' management wants to see more from him. His two-year deal gives him time to sort out the cracks in his game, but he has turned out to be a decent forward for Carolina so far.

The signing leaves Carolina GM Don Waddell one million dollars over the salary cap and all players currently under contract. Jake Gardiner's status is still to be determined, but as of now his $4 million cap-hit is under long-term injured reserve, which would then be removed from the team's total salary cap with three million to spare.
