Seravalli continued, saying he believes '(the #isles) put an offer on the table for Kadri. Other teams have told me they believe it's in the 7x7 range.'
If either of the aforementioned reports are true, then a 7 x 7 deal for Kadri is a great deal for the player, and a risky one for the team. Kadri is a great player, no question, but that deal could age poorly.
Nazem Kadri will be 32 at the start of the 2022-23 season, and just had by far his best season in the NHL on a stacked Colorado team. His point totals, adjusted to a full 82 game pace the last five seasons are: 56, 49, 58, 47, 100. Definitely seems worthy of consideration when offering him a huge sack of cash. Obviously, Kadri's value can't be measured only in points. He possesses a wealth of intangibles; grit, IQ, work ethic, and so many others. Kadri immediately improves any team who signs him, but in the salary cap era it isn't so simple.
First off, a seven-year deal for a 32-year old player means he's 39 at contract's end. Kadri plays a gritty, physical game that can wear on even the most durable bodies. If Kadri plays until he's 39, how valuable will he be in the last few years of that deal? Second, $7M for a guy who has averaged 62 points per 82 games the last five seasons is a stark overpayment. Sure, he won a Stanley Cup and plays the game the right way, but there is almost no upside on this deal.
The Islanders have $11 million to re-sign budding star Noah Dobson, D Alexander Romanov, and F Kieffer Bellows, and now they are reportedly trying to give Kadri $7M. Not only is that going to take Simone Biles-level cap-gymnastics, the Isles currently roster four very good centers in Mat Barzal, Brock Nelson, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Casey Cizikas. Overpaying for an asset they do not need seems imprudent. On the other hand, the Islanders need to right the ship, and Lou Lamoriello will need to do something bold to win a Cup anytime soon. And at this point, I am convinced there is nothing Lou cannot/will not do.
In any event, the Islanders appear to have serious interest in Kadri, as multiple reports have linked the two sides. If Lamoriello is going to sign Kadri, he has two months to sort out the team's salary cap and formulate the final 2022-23 roster.
