The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have re-signed F Owen Tippett to a two-year contract worth $3 million ($1.5M AAV):

Tippett, acquired from Florida in the Claude Giroux deal, was an RFA this summer. The former 10th overall pick has left a little to be desired, managing only 40 points in 115 games between the Florida Panthers & the Flyers. Having been traded for franchise legend Claude Giroux doesn't take any weight off his shoulders either.

The Flyers & their fans are desperate for someone, anyone to step up. They finished 31st in the NHL in 2021-22 & ended the year with almost zero salary cap space. An unacceptable place for any team to end up & an indictment on the GM. Ahem, Chuck Fletcher.

In relatively sheltered minutes, Tippett produces at an okay-ish rate. His ability to consistently drive offense is basically offset by his inability to provide consistent defensive pressure. He doesn't take a lot of penalties, which is a bonus, and we don't have enough data to suggest he would be overly useful on special teams. But the Flyers weren't great at either last year, so why not give him a shot?
