Goaltender Ilya Samsonov agreed to terms with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The deal is for one year, $1.8 million.

The 25-year-old netminder was not qualified by the Washington Capitals last week. Despite the Caps selecting him in the first round (22nd overall), the goaltender has been less than stellar in his three years with the club.

In 89 games played, Samsonov is 52-22-8 for a 2.81GAA and a .902 save percentage. It is his inconsitency that may have frustrated Washington. There are times when he stands on his head, and at other times, he is a bit of a liability.

This signing seems to be an insurance policy for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Their recent signing of oft-injured netminder, Matt Murray, has indeed raised some eyebrows. Samsonov should slide in as backup, or even at the number one option.
