During the 'Real Kyper & Bourne' podcast on Monday, Nick Kypreos revealed that the Tampa Bay Lightning had planned on placing defenceman Ryan McDonagh on waivers if he didn't waive his no-trade clause.

Kypreos went on to say that the Lightning had received a commitment from the Columbus Blue Jackets that they would place a waiver claim on him if they decided to go down that route.

"The way it was described to me if Ryan McDonagh didn't agree to be traded, he was going to be waived and Tampa had a commitment from Columbus to claim him, he wasn't thrilled about being traded," Kypreos said.

Despite not wanting to be traded, McDonagh's time in Tampa Bay ended after he was dealt to the Nashville Predators on Sunday in exchange for defenceman Philippe Myers and forward Grant Mismash.

McDonagh's time in Tampa Bay can be deemed as a success, playing a pivotal role on the blueline in their runs to the 2020 and 2021 Stanley Cup. But Tampa Bay is facing a cap crunch and still need to get Jan Rutta and Ondrej Palat under contract and the easiest way to free up money was by dealing McDonagh and his $6.75 million salary.
