The World Championship Gold Medal Game was tightly contested. After late comeback from Team Canada, the two teams went to OT. In the extra period, Finland scored a powerplay goal to secure the gold. However, the call that led to the Finns' powerplay was suspect at best; outright mistaken at worst. Judge for yourself:

This came after a blown call on which Cole Sillinger lifted the stick of Miro Heiskanen, and the Finns' own stick clipped him in the face. Sillinger was subsequently called for high sticking.

Canada's Pierre-Luc Dubois was outspoken about the officiating in overtime. 'It sucks. To lose in overtime of a game to a penalty that's...it really sucks...you don't even know the rulebook anymore...for that to happen in overtime of a gold medal game, yeah.'

Thomas Chabot was more measured in his response, but in his opinion 'it was a bit of a dive, I think.' TSN's Gord Miller, who served as the play-by-play commentator for the game, had his own thoughts:

'You can argue the OT call, that was the referee's judgement, but the high-sticking call that put Finland on the 5 on 3 in the third period was indisputably wrong. Maybe time to look at expanding the coach's challenge to include incidents where something clearly didn't happen.'
