2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship day 5 recap

Day 5 at the 2022 IIHF World Hockey Championship has wrapped up and a massive upset occurred during the morning games.

For the first time in their history, Austria has beaten Czechia at the senior men's level, winning by a score of 2-1 in a shootout. Brian Lebler tied the game with 48 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime, then Peter Schneider scored the winner.

In Helsinki, Nikolaj Ehlers scored his first of the tournament to lead Denmark to a tight, 2-1 win over Italy. Italy's goal in the second period was a special moment. Alex Petan got the goal and it was assisted by his cousin, Dante Hannoun.

In the afternoon games, Sweden used a 5-0 first period to blow out Great Britain by a score of 6-0. British netminder Ben Bowns was replaced to start the second period. Rasmus Dahlin had a three-point game for Tre Kronor, while Magnus Hellberg made 16 saves for the shutout.

Sweden's goals: Anton Bengtsson (x2), Rasmus Asplund (x2), Rasmus Dahlin, Joakim Nordstrom.

Despite getting blown out 9-1 by Denmark in their first game of the tournament, Kazakhstan has played quite well since. On Tuesday afternoon, they came up short against Switzerland, but kept it close, with the final score being 3-2.
