Pittsburgh Penguins' forward Brock McGinn scored a controversial goal early in the first period of Game 3 in Pittsburgh. McGinn threw the puck on goal from behind the goal line. The puck then bounced off of Rangers' defenseman Patrick Nemeth as he knocked the net off the moorings.

The goal was originally waved off as no-goal. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan proceeded to challenge the call. The officials then announced good goal to the chants of the Penguins' faithful, "Igor, Igor."

The rule being utilized in this situation, NHL rule 63.7 states, "In order to award a goal in this situation, the goalpost must have been displaced by the actions of a defending player, the attacking player must have an imminent scoring opportunity prior to the goalpost being displaced, and it must be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the normal position of the goalposts."
