Prior to Monday night's game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs, Jon Cooper told reporters that he thinks Auston Matthews could score 70 goals in a single-season.

"I wouldn't be surprised if some time in his career he gets 70. That's how good of a scorer he is," Cooper said.

He added, "Auston is probably the best in the league at changing his angle at a high rate of speed. So he is just not a traditional 'here it's on my stick, I'm going to shoot it,' He shoots it from his ankles, he shoots it out wide, and it's just the release and the velocity is big time."

The last time 70 or more goals in a single-season was during the 1992-92 season when Teemu Selanne and Alexander Mogilny both had 76. The closest to 70 ever since was Alexander Ovechkin, who put up 65 goals during the 2007-08 campaign.

Matthews went on to score a hat-trick on Monday night, which brought him to 54 goals on the season, tying a record set by Rick Vaive, 40 years ago. Toronto would go on to win the game by a score of 6-2.

The Maple Leafs and Lightning will meet for the final time in the regular season on April 21st, before a potential first round playoff matchup in early May.
