NHL makes decision following Nino Niederreiter's suspension appeal

On March 19th, the National Hockey League announced that Carolina Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter was suspended for one game after slashing Washington Capitals forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby.

Niederreiter was given a two-minute minor for slashing on the play during the first period of the game on March 18th.

In a statement, the NHL said, "National Hockey League Commissioner Gary Bettman today upheld the one-game suspension that was assessed to Carolina Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter for slashing Washington Capitals forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby during NHL Game No. 978 in Carolina on March 18.

Commissioner Bettman heard Niederreiter's appeal of the original decision, assessed March 19, at a hearing on March 23.

The incident occurred at 13:43 of the first period. Niederreiter was assessed a minor penalty for slashing."

The Chur (Switzerland) native has appeared in 58 games this season for the Hurricanes and has put up 34 points (twenty goals, fourteen assists), eighteen penalty minutes, and is a plus-eighteen.
