The Montreal Canadiens gave an injury update on defenceman Jeff Petry on Saturday morning as they prepare for tonight's game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Petry, 34, left Thursday's game against the Florida Panthers and did not return. Now the Canadiens say that the veteran defenceman will be out indefinitely after suffering a lower-body injury.

It's been an extremely tough season for the Ann Arbor (Michigan) native. After four consecutive seasons of 40+ points, Petry has seen his production drop off significantly. In 57 games, he's recorded sixteen points (four goals, twelve assists), 30 penalty minutes, and is a minus-ten.

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes came out before the trade deadline and said that if they were able to, they would accommodate a trade for Jeff Petry, but they would not budge on their asking price. Ultimately, a deal never happened prior to 3 p.m. ET on March 21st, but it's likely that Petry will get moved this summer.

The Canadiens are back in action tonight as they face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada. Recently acquired defenceman William Lagesson could make his debut in place of Petry tonight. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET on CBC.
