The New York Rangers finally made a big splash on Wednesday when they locked up their former No. 1 overall pick to a two-year extension, locking him in until the 2025-26 season.

Former top pick

Through three years of his career in New York, Alexis Lafreniere has yet to set the world alight, and that was certainly reflected in his modest extension, coming in at just $2.325 AAV.

Now, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed why, as it may potentially spell the end of the former No. 1 overall pick's future in the Big Apple.

A move coming?

The theory behind the two year extension at a modest number is that they will try to get him going under a new coach this year, and if it doesn't work, moving him next summer will be more palatable to other teams.

Everybody is kind of in a position where they're saying, look, we're going to try this under a new coach, see where it goes if it's not good next summer then I think you can move him at a number that I think teams can handle because I just think if it's another year likes this they're probably going to have to move onTo me it's a 2-yr deal, but it's a 1-yr deal in New York and then we will see.

At just 21-years of age, there's plenty of teams out there that could be willing to take the risk on such high upside, but for a team in New York looking for a playoff run, moving him if he disappoints again could be the best play.
