The news of Russia's World Junior team being kicked off a flight in Calgary has spread quickly, and even Russian commentators are calling the behaviour terrible. The team was reportedly removed from a flight headed to Frankfurt on New Year's Eve after refusing to wear masks, being unruly and smoking/vaping in the airport and on the plane. Famous Russian sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev sees no defence for their actions.

"You don't go into someone else's country with your own attitude. Stop embarrassing yourselves and embarrassing your country," said Guberniev. "There are airline regulations. I fly a lot myself and wear a mask. God forbid something happens, my mask slips off and I get a reprimand, I immediately fix it. It's a shame."

Guberniev also addressed the reports of the team and head coach Sergei Zubov smoking on the plane.

"Well, buy an airplane and smoke there. I have no words," he said. "They set themselves and the country up, and they treat us accordingly. Often we behave like pigs. If you're flying by charter, then do what you want for your money. But otherwise - respect the rules and laws of other countries. I was told that Zubov smoked himself. What kind of example is he setting? I'm ashamed of such behavior."

The Czech team was also not allowed to board the flight. The team's manager claims claims it was a case of mistaken identity. . Zobov has denied the smoking rumours, saying he quite cigarettes three years ago. However, a person on the plane reported he was attempting to vape with a device hidden up his sleeve.
