16-year-old player injured during game in medically-induced coma

Doctors continue to monitor 16-year-old player Valentin Rodionov, who was injured during a game early Monday. The latest reports out of Russia state the young defenceman has been placed in a medically-induced coma with a serious head injury following surgery.

The latest reports state Rodionov is dealing with a cerebral edema (swelling of the brain), as well as a brain contusion (bruising). However, he is listed as stable and the team insists his life is not in danger.

"Please note that there is no fundraising for support," said the Moscow Dynamo Youth Club in a news release. "The club fully assumes all financial expenses for drug supply. The management, hockey players and coaching staff wish Valentin a speedy recovery. Dynamo Moscow will additionally report on changes in the defender's health."

Reports on how Rodionov was injured are conflicting. One of them on Monday stated he was involved in a fight and hit his head after falling on the ice. The team states he took a hard fall into the boards, came back to the bench and lost consciousness, at which point he was rushed to hospital.
