Following the shut down of the Bratislava Capitals after the sudden deaths of player Boris Sadecky and GM Dusan Pasek Jr., players that made up the team are starting to sign elsewhere. One of them is Canadian Sam Jardine, who has a new contract with HIFK in the Finnish Elite League (SM-Liiga). Jardine has decided to honour his former teammate for the remainder of the season by wearing his number 10.

"We got off to a good start to the season and we had a very cohesive team," said Jardine, referring to Bratislava. "Sadecky's death was very difficult for the team and I think the organization made the right decision to interrupt the season. It would have been really hard to push through through after that."

"I'm playing here with number 10 now and I've thought a lot about Boris," Jardine continued. "Such events make you think about life differently."

Jardine, who is from Alberta, was drafted into the NHL by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round in 2011. However, he spent several years going between the AHL and ECHL before signing with Bratislava for the 2021-22 season. Following the deaths of Sadecky and Pasek Jr., the Capitals made a special request to the ICE Hockey League to shut down for the remainder of the season and return next year. Several of the players on the team have signed new contracts as they attempt to move on.
