For a guy who has only spent one season in the NHL so far, Kirill Kaprizov just cashed in big time. Last year's Calder Trophy winner as the NHL's Rookie of the Year has inked a new contract with the Minnesota Wild for five years at a total of $45 million. That's $9 million AAV.

The hope was to sign Kaprizov to six or more years, but he and his camp were adamant about a shorter term. Kaprizov is hoping to cash in for an even bigger amount when he becomes a free agent and the salary cap goes up by a significant amount.

Kaprizov turned 24 in April. He scored 27 goals and tallied 51 points in 55 games last season. Before that, he was one of the top scorers in the KHL for two seasons. The Wild are hoping Kaprizov can be the centrepiece of a team that has recently done some retooling in order to get better and compete for a playoff spot.
