The Vancouver Canucks will open up their training camp in a matter of days, but they still have two star players that remain unsigned, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.

Late last week, Canucks general manager Jim Benning said he's confident that they can get the duo re-signed shortly and that there is no anger among any of the parties involved.

"We have a good relationship," Benning told Sportsnet. "There's no angry sides. We're just trying to work through it to figure out how to make everybody happy. We're in constant communication with Pat Brisson and his group. The communication's good and we're just trying to figure out how to get to some common ground from their perspective and our perspective. They're important players in the future of our team and our group but these are complicated deals."

Benning added, "We talk every day or every second day. We've got a week before main camp starts, so we have time to get it done and then get these guys in camp."

Pettersson recently returned to Vancouver from his home country, Sweden, while Quinn Hughes remains in Michigan. Benning admitted that he wants both of them at training camp, but for that to become reality, a deal must be completed within the next 72 hours or so.

"I would like them in training camp. If it's possible to figure out deals before camp, I'd like to try to figure it out because I feel like they're still young players, they're still developing and I think training camp is important for them," Benning said.

Hughes, 21, played in all 56 games for the Canucks during the 2020-21 season where he recorded 41 points (3 G, 38 A), 22 penalty minutes and was a -24. Pettersson on the other hand only appeared in 26 games due to a wrist injury. In those 26 games, he was nearly a point-per-game player, tallying 21 points (11 G, 10 A).
