It appears Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev wanted out of Toronto. That's according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, who reports that Mikheyev requested a trade at the end of the 2020-21 season, but was denied by Leafs' GM Kyle Dubas.

"With Zach Hyman and Joe Thornton gone from the left wing, the organization told Mikheyev it considers him a key part of their team and are counting on him to have a big year," wrote Friedman.

According to Friedman, Mikheyev was unhappy with his role and ice-time last season. He was eighth among Toronto forwards for TOI with an average of 14:13. Mikheyev played in 54 out of 56 games for the team, scording seven goals and adding 10 assists. His rookie season in 2019-20 was going very well until he suffered a serious cut to his wrist from a skate during a game.

Mikheyev has the potential to fill a bigger role for the Leafs this season. It will be interesting to see if both sides can make it work or whether he'll once again request a trade next summer.
