Professional sports teams have always worn white jerseys for half their games be it on the road or at home.
This includes the NHL, where the home team wears their colored jerseys and the visiting team always wears white.
It goes back to the days of black and white television. If both teams wore colors back then, it would have been impossible for fans at home to differentiate between the teams.
That is why back in the day, the home team always wore white. Obviously, that has changed though as now it is the other way around.
In today's NHL it is very rare to see the home team wear white, but it sounds like that could be changing once again.
NHL insider and The Hockey News editor in chief Ryan Kennedy revealed today that there has been chatter among NHL circles that we could see the NHL revert back to the original jersey rules.
Obviously, this change wouldn't really have an impact on how any games play out, but it would be a new experience for many fans to see their favorite team wear white at home.
This change could also affect jersey sales. Would white jerseys become the norm in this scenario?
As things are currently, most fans typically wear the colored jerseys to games. Just look at crowd in Calgary for example.
The Saddle dome is regularly packed with fans wearing nothing but red. Would that change if suddenly the team was wearing white at home?
It is hard to say, especially considering how expensive hockey jerseys are. Either way, hopefully the NHL will get fan feedback before making such a major change to the way our favorite sport looks.
