It was announced today that the Detroit Red Wings have fired head coach Derek Lalonde, and replaced him with Todd McLellan.

Lalonde has been the coach of the Red Wings for a year and a half but will now be replaced as the team continues to struggle during the 2024-25 season.

McLellan, who most recently coached the Los Angeles Kings will take over his head coach of the original six franchise.

Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman today announced that the team has named Todd McLellan the 29th Head Coach in franchise history and signed him to a multi-year contract.

Additionally, the Red Wings have hired Trent Yawney as an Assistant Coach.

Head Coach Derek Lalonde and Associate Coach Bob Boughner have been relieved of their coaching duties, effective immediately.

Reports suggest that McLellan has been given a multi-year deal, thus hopefully he will be a good fit for the team, whose core of Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, and Dylan Larkin have all the talent in the world to succeed.

Players such as Justin Holl and Jeff Petry have been disappointing this year, and the loss of Jake Walman via trade to San Jose has been a tough pill to swallow, especially considering they gave up a second round pick to move him.

We will see if Todd McLellan has what it takes to get this team back into the playoff picture; they finished only a point out last season.
