The Washington Capitals blew a two-goal lead late in the third period to fall 4-3 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
Two goals against in the final minutes of regulation allowed Toronto to erase what had appeared to be a certain win for the Capitals.
To add insult, two other Leafs' goals were disallowed upon review, and yet still, the Capitals couldn't build off that advantage. Toronto was playing a back-to-back, and they went ahead to win the game.
Head coach Spencer Carbery said after the match that it was frustrating. He felt his team was in complete control for a significant portion of the game against a good opponent, and that they should have had the two points.
This isn't the first time that Carbery has thrown his team under the bus, as he publicly bashed them during the preseason too.
He admits his team made huge mistakes giving the Leafs their opportunities and the momentum swung in their favour.
The latter included a tally from William Nylander, whom Carbery had highlighted pre-game as a major threat, and a late Nic Dowd holding penalty with under a minute remaining which allowed Mitch Marner to pop in the tying power-play marker. John Tavares sealed it for the Leafs on a breakaway in overtime.
Rasmus Sandin, who has now lost all four games against Toronto since being traded to Washington in 2023, said the team may have gotten a little too comfortable after a hot start to the season.
Aliaksei Protas added that it was not like the Capitals to let leads slip away, as they had been strong at holding onto leads and were yet to lose a game when leading after two periods.
The Leafs outshot Washington 18-7 in the third and had 14-4 shot chances at five-on-five. The Capitals have more than once responded to losses with a win this season, and as recently as an 8-1 win over St. Louis after an October loss.
