Strong performances from their defense, goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, and enough scoring to get by have propelled them to the top of the league, two points above the New Jersey Devils, and three over the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers and Vegas Golden Knights.
Their head coach, Scott Arniel, equally deserves his flowers as he's energized the team to a new level. He showed his passion last night against the Detroit Red Wings, losing his cool with referees. Following a missed interference call on JT Compher, who clearly interfered with the Jets' Dylan Samberg, Arniel was far from subtle.
The team's newly minted top line of Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Gabriel Vilardi has been extremely efficient for the team, allowing them to take down the best of the best in the NHL.
Connor Hellebuyck has been a massive difference maker, coming off a Vezina trophy winning season, he has played 8 games and has a whopping .923 save percentage. He is a model of elite consistency, and the Winnipeg Jets are thankful to have him, having signed him to a seven-year $8.5 million annual deal. A former fifth round pick who once played in the NAHL, it is incredible how far he has come.
Scott Arniel's historic run as head coach, giving the Winnipeg Jets a 8-0-0 start as a new head coach (with the franchise), was one of the most electric periods of hockey we have seen in Winnipeg since they returned. We will see if the team can keep up this incredible rhythm all the way into the playoffs; that's when it'll really count.
