The Ottawa Senators fell in dramatic fashion against the Vegas Golden Knights, and after the defeat, Linus Ullmark laid the blame at his own feet.
This past summer, the Ottawa Senators made the huge deal to land Linus Ullmark from the Boston Bruins, but unfortunately the star netminder has been dealing with plenty of injury issues early in his Sens tenure. Now though, he's back on the ice, and after a solid start to the year, he had his worst outing of the season, allowing five goals on just 27 shots, seeing his team fall 5-4 on the road.
When asked after the game about his performance, Ullmark shouldered the blame entirely for the Senators loss:
"If they had a capable goalie in there today they would have won 4-3 I would say," said Ullmark following the game. "Its way too sloppy to be in this league, this is the type of game where you have to rely on your goaltender to shut the door. Letting those two in at the end caused us to lose the game."
"I take it upon myself, I never put any blame on anyone else, it is my job to make the saves when it's needed," added Ullmark.
In two games prior to this one, Ullmark allowed a combined five goals on 58 shots, and with the bad outing against Vegas, his numbers look awful with a 3.34 GAA and an .882 save percentage. The former Vezina Trophy winner still has the talent to get it done on the ice however, and with the Senators sitting at 4-3-0 on the season, the entire team has the roster capable of making a run at the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year.
However, to get that done, Ullmark will need to resemble the player we saw a year ago that posted a 2.58 GAA and a .915 save percentage, so we will now wait and see if he can bounce back after a poor outing and make his mark as the clear No. 1 for this team.
