The New York Rangers decided to send enforcer Matt Rempe down to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL this week. They have now replaced him via the call-up of Jake Leschyshyn.

Matt Rempe quickly became a fan favourite in the New York Rangers organization last season, with his willingness to hit and fight just about anything that moved. The

While New York Rangers journalist Larry Brooks was angry at the team just last week for scratching Rempe, sending him down was surprising, and sent a clear message.

"I don't get why Big Matt Rempe is a healthy scratch for this game after getting seven shifts worth a sum of 3:40 in Saturday night's 6-5 OT defeat to Utah after having been scratched for last Wednesday's opener in Pittsburgh. I don't get it."

The team's replacement for Matt Rempe is Jake Leschyshyn, who has spent his career split between the Vegas Golden Knights organization and the Rangers. Matt Rempe notably had 71 penalty minutes in only 17 games last season, whereas Leschyshyn is a much more tame player, which is likely more favourable to head coach Peter Laviolette.

While Matt Rempe will likely get more chances this season in the NHL, right now, his antics and inconsistencies have forced him back to the AHL. At only 22, and with his elite physical traits, the potential is still there, just not as quickly as many people hoped.

Some Rangers fans showed their frustration quickly to this roster move:

Rempe wasn't given a good enough chance. The Rangers only played five minutes a game. He is a good physical player who can create plays and make things happen. It's also better that he has matured from that goon style of fighting every game too and is now just making solid hits, moving guys away from the net, and winning battles.

Some younger fans, who have grown a close connection to Rempe revealed they broke down in tears when he was sent down, or called out the New York Rangers organization for profiting off his name.

With the Rangers off to an amazing start, we will see if this was the right decision for the team.
