The Nashville Predators have had plenty of positives this off-season, but now it appears arbitrators have screwed them over in a surprising deal.

After a wild start to the off-season, we are now heading into arbitration territory, with many teams set for arbitration meetings in the near future, starting with Spencer Stastney and the Nashville Predators. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Predators went in looking for a two-year, two-way deal that was worth $775k in the NHL and $125k in the AHL.

Spencer Stastney arbitration:

Nashville asks for a two-year, two-way deal:

2024-25: $775K/$125K

2025-26: $775K/$175K

Player asks for one-year, one-way at $950K

The player way looking for just a one-year deal valued at $950k, but the arbitrators saw this one differently. The actual deal looked much different than expected, with the player receiving a two-year deal worth $825k in the NHL and $400k in the AHL in year one, with the second-year being a one-way deal worth $850k.

Spencer Stastney arbitration award

2024-25: 825K NHL/400K AHL
2025-26: It's a one-way at $850-ish

Had the Nashville Predators gotten their way, they would have only paid $300,000 had Stastney stayed in the NHL for these two years, but will instead be on the hook for a minimum of $1.25-million.

Given that Stastney has played just 28 games in the NHL in two years, it's a surprisingly large deal, with this one favouring the player in a big way, and now we will wait and see if the 24-year old can find his way into this loaded, Stanley Cup Playoff hungry team.
