Heartbreaking news was announced today as legendary Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Bob Cole has passed away at the age of 90.

Hockey Night in Canada released this statement following the announcement:

Bob Cole, whose voice and lively language were the Saturday night soundtrack to hockey games over a broadcasting career that spanned more than half a century, has died.

Cole, who was 90, died Wednesday night in St. John's surrounded by his family, his daughter Megan told CBC News on Thursday.

Cole's trademark call — "Oh, baby!" — was one of many signposts he brought to play-by-play commentaries that earned him the love of fans and even players themselves.

My heart is broken today. My friend Bob Cole passed away last night in his beloved St. John's.

He was one of the sound tracks of our game.

He had a passion that every hockey fan felt every time he announced a game.

There will only be one Bob Cole.
And now he's gone.

With nearly 50 years of incredible service to hockey fans, Bob Cole will be remembered as one of the greatest to ever do the play-by-play gig, alongside greats such as Don Cherry.

Rest in peace, Bob Cole.
