The Leafs dropped game 3 to the Boston Bruins last night, and Auston Matthews failed to get on the scoresheet. Now, a major health update has been revealed regarding Matthews.

While Auston Matthews led the team in hits and had several shot attempts last night, he failed to take over the game like he showed he was capable of doing in game 2. While some fans complained, it was clear that something was off. Now, insider Chris Johnston has revealed that Matthews was indeed playing through an illness during game 3.

"The Leafs should also have top-line center Auston Matthews back in better health after he played through an illness during Wednesday's 4-2 loss. That explains why he was the only regular to miss the morning skate at Scotiabank Arena — opting instead for more rest — and helps account in part for a night when he didn't look like his usual explosive self though still logging another 23-plus minutes."

This gives a massive explanation as to why Matthews missed the morning skate, taking the option to get extra rest that morning, as reported by Elliotte Friedman.

"Sounds like Matthews is «taking the option,» and resting this am"

This is a big setback for the Leafs, however, it is nice to see that Matthews is willing to play through it. Hopefully the extra day of rest is enough to get Matthews going back at full health for game 4. The Leafs will also look to add William Nylander back into the lineup if he is able to recover from his mysterious injury.
