Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have placed forward Jimmy Vesey on waivers.

Vesey, 27, was signed to a low risk one-year, $900,000 deal by the Leafs this past offseason. While he has a very high skill level, he had not been able to put it all together through his first four seasons in the league, and the same thing has happened this year. Through 30 games, he has just five goals and seven points.

«One of the things we're looking to do is to increase our flexibility on the roster, but also as Campbell gets closer to return and Simmonds is closer to return, we do have to do some juggling with the cap situation,» said general manager Kyle Dubas regarding placing Vesey on waivers.

Given the flat cap era we are in, it is unlikely any teams will put a claim in for Vesey. If he clears, the Leafs will be able to place him on either the taxi squad or in the AHL if they choose to do so.

That wasn't all for waivers today, either. Forwards Paul Byron (MTL) and Mikhail Grigorenko (CBJ) were also placed on waivers, as was goaltender Anton Forsberg (WIN). While Byron will likely go unclaimed, Grigorenko is an interesting name given his very high skill set, as is Forsberg given that teams are wanting to have three goaltenders on their active roster this season due to quarantine protocols if one of their two main goalies were to sustain an injury.
