Crazy stats show just how bad Buffalo has been this season

Yes, Buffalo has been bad for while, missing the playoffs for the last nine seasons straight. But in a year where many felt there would be at least some improvement after the signing of Taylor Hall, the team seems to be hitting brand new lows, and these stats are good proof of that.

According to hockey reporter Dan Fetes, if every goal the Buffalo Sabres scored was worth two instead of the usual one, the team would still be below .500 in their last 17 games. They'd have a record of 6-11. This shows just how bad the team has been on its current 11 game losing streak, which was extended by a 6-0 loss to the Washington Capitals last night. As Fetes says, "there is no rock bottom" for the Sabres. They just seem to keep sinking lower.

It doesn't end there, sadly. Buffalo is 0-9-2 in their last 11 games, 2-14-2 in the last 18, and head coach Ralph Krueger is 7-23-4 in his last 34 games. After 27 games this season, the team is a dismal 6-17-4, and has been outscored 92-56. The Sabres have been shut out six times this season, or just over 22 percent of the games they've taken part in (yeesh!).

The last time Buffalo beat a team that wasn't the New Jersey Devils was January 26th of this year, a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers. If there is any silver lining right now, the Sabres are set to take on the New Jersey Devils tonight. The Devils have lost 11 straight games at home and the matchup is taking place in New Jersey. Perhaps the Sabres can get a desperately needed win to get the team's confidence up at least a little.

I've mentioned this previously but it bears mentioning again: how Krueger still has a job in Buffalo is a mystery. I'm not sure Krueger is the main problem for the Sabres, but firing him would at least show fans that the owners and GM recognize what is going on and are trying to fix it. Right now, it simply seems like they don't care and are more than happy to basement dwell indefinitely.

One more terrible stat before we end, the bottom seven players for +/- in the NHL are all members of the Sabres.
