A sad and tragic end for 19-year-old Timur Faizutdinov. The hockey player, who has been in hospital since last Friday fighting for his life, has died according to several reports out of Russia.

Faizutdinov was struck in the head by a puck during a game in the MHL. According to doctors, the puck had hit him in the carotid artery, causing a traumatic brain injury. He had been on life support since entering the hospital in Yaroslavl.

"Currently, a set of verification measures is being carried out aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident. Based on the results of the check, a procedural decision will be made," said his team, Dynamo St. Petersburg, in a statement.

Faizutdinov, a defenceman, was captain of his team. His words from when he was given that role back in September carry even greater significance now.

"The most important thing in the role of a captain is to fight always to the end, until the very, very last moment, sparing no effort, and charge your team with these actions," said Faizutdinov at the time.

The KHL and youth hockey leagues across Russia are holding moments of silence in Faizutdinov's honour over the coming days.

Our sincere condolences to Faizutdinov's family, friends and fans at this time.
