The Montreal Canadiens will have to make due without defenceman Ben Chiarot for a while. Chiarot underwent surgery on his hand today in Montreal and is expected to miss six-to-eight weeks in total, meaning he will be out for a large chunk of the regular season. The Habs play their last game on May 8th.

Chiarot was injured last Wednesday in a fight against J.T. Miller of the Vancouver Canucks. You could tell something was wrong after he threw his first couple of punches, and the Canadiens later announced he had fractured his hand.

Chiarot has spent the entire 2020-21 season playing on the Habs' top pairing with Shea Weber. He has averaged over 21 minutes of ice-time per game this season, which won't be easy to replace for the Canadiens. With his injury, it is expected that Victor Mete, who had spent much of the first part of the season as a healthy scratch, will draw into many more games. Meanwhile, rookie Alexander Romanov has been moved into Chiarot's spot with Weber, although that could change at any time.
