The NMU Wildcats, representing Northern Michigan University, is facing a mass exodus as several players have entered the transfer portal following a terrible season.

The NCAA transfer portal allows players to enter their name for any reason they want. Before the portal, which was encated in 2018, it was much more difficult for players to change schools. After going 12-16-6 in 2023-24, the Northern Michigan University Wildcats mens' team is facing what can only be described as a mass exodus.

In total, 13 players have made themselves available to other schools, leaving just nine players left from the 2023-24 team.

"Mass exodus ongoing at NMU with 13 players and counting in the portal. It's completely unprecedented to see a team essentially dissolve. I'm trying to imagine the impact. Hard to wrap your head around really."

Unfortunately for NMU, their NMU Men's Basketball team was also hit hard by the transfer portal, something the university really needs to look into quickly to see just what's going on.

"With 13 players in the portal (blue) and nine players graduating (yellow), the Wildcats have nine returning players on their roster.

Of those 13 players in the portal..
➡️ 4 rising fifth-years
➡️ 1 rising senior
➡️ 4 rising juniors
➡️ 4 rising sophomores

The good news: Help is on the way.

As of now, NMU has eight incoming freshman, including a pair of NHL Draft picks in goalie Hampton Slukynsky (USHL-Fargo) and defenseman Rasmus Larsson (USHL-Green Bay).

It's arguably the best freshman class in the league heading into 24-25.

The bad news: There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding why this is happening.

The U.P. can be a difficult place to recruit and retain talent, and the portal definitely plays a role in giving players the freedom to leave."

While the NCAA is currently enjoying the interest in the league's Frozen Four tournament to determine the best college team in the US, disturbing details recently emerged in the tragic passing of two former NCAA players. Sidney Capolino (23) and Meghan Moore (25), both alumni of New England College's NCAA Division III hockey team.
