Kassian upsets Oilers fans with Cameo video, blames TSN for sharing without context

Edmonton Oilers forward Zack Kassian drew the ire of some fans after sending a video to a Calgary Flames fans in which he said "Go Flames go."

Kassian has been one of the biggest NHL voices on Cameo, which is an app that allows fans to pay their favorite celebrities and/or athletes to give a quick shout out, whether it be for a birthday or something fun. Clearly, a fan wanted to have some fun with the Oilers rugged winger, and asked him to send a video with the following message:

Some appear to have taken offence to this, given the bitter hatred between the Oilers and Flames. After this video came out yesterday, it was making its waves around social media, prompting Kassian to put out a statement on his Instagram account.

"Just to be clear, here is the full video from a cameo that was completely taken out of context that TSN posted," his statement read. "As you can see this video was recorded in December as a Christmas gift for someone's friend. It was in good fun from an Oilers fan to a Flames fan read from a script. Looking back I should have used better judgement and turned down this request."

"However, it's sad that most media outlets choose to create conflict. 99% of my cameos have been to wish someone's loved one a happy birthday, words of encouragement to a young child who lost a parent/recovering from an illness, wishing someone good luck for a job interview or my favorite, interacting with Oilers fans!! No good deed goes unpunished these days."

Hopefully this statement will allow fans to realize the context behind this message, and that it was nothing more than a lighthearted joke. Kassian's Oilers take on the Flames both Friday and Saturday night, though he will not be in the lineup as he is on the injured reserve with what the team is calling an upper-body injury.
