Last night there was a call made that had so much bias behind it that is resulted in a player being tossed from the game.

Referees Make Terrible Calls During Sabres and Rangers Game

During the second period of last night's game between the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers, Sabres defenseman Erik Johnson dropped the gloves with Rangers forward Willie Cuylle after Cuylle laid out one of Johnson's teammates.

While this seems like just any other fight in the NHL, Johnson was given an additional two-minute penalty for instigating. While Johnson dropped the gloves first, it is clear that Cuylle was up for the fight.

After finding out the news that he would get an extra penalty, Johnson was outraged and eventually ejected for his actions.

The Rangers did not score on the powerplay that they got as a result of this fight but they did get preferential treatment all game getting four powerplays as opposed to the Sabres one.

Johnson Exposes The Referee's Bias

After the game, Erik Johnson revealed the true reason behind his extra penalty and it is clearly unjust. Earlier in the game the former first overall pick complained about a missed call and the referees decided to punish him for this by tacking on the extra instigator call.

"I don't know if there's a gray area with the instigator or what have you, but that's not an instigator. That's two willing combatants that both accept a fight after what I thought was a hit on my partner, a young player in a vulnerable spot, and he needed to answer the bell for that. I thought it was ridiculous. I'd like to say more, even if I get fined. I really don't care. I thought it was BS." - Erik Johnson

Erik Johnson was still upset when I spoke to him after the OT loss.

According to Johnson, the ref told the Sabres' bench that he was given the instigator penalty because they were complaining too much in the first period.

Fans are now wondering if an investigation will be launched into the two referees but as it stands, there is no word on if they will be punished for these calls.

More details to come.
