The Pittsburgh Penguins have been gracious in honouring the life of former Penguin Adam Johnson after his tragic passing, and now they've made a major rule change following the tragedy.

Neck Guards

The English Ice Hockey Association were the first to announce the mandate of neck guards since Johnson's passing, and now, it appears the Penguins are doing the same.

According to a report, the Penguins are making it mandatory for their ECHL and AHL teams to have each and every player wear protective gear for their necks.

Per Mike Sullivan, the Penguins will mandate neck protection for their AHL and ECHL teams.

No hard mandate can be made at the NHL level but they will heavily recommend such a measure.

The NHLPA would have to formally accept a rule change to make this mandate at the NHL level, but it appears Pittsburgh will heavily recommend that move, but for now, they're taking great steps at the lower levels to protect their players.
