The hockey world is in mourning after the tragic passing of former NHLer Adam Johnson over the weekend, and now, the Elite Ice Hockey League in England have officially made a move in the wake of the tragedy.

A smart move

According to a report, the EIHL has now made it mandatory for players to wear neck guards, beginning in the 2024 season.

Whether or not it will help in every potential accident can't be guaranteed, but it's a step in the right direction for player safety, and with skates and the incredibly hard ice, protecting players is always the best move to make.

NHL to follow in their footsteps?

While there's been no word yet on the NHL's potential follow up to this move, it would certainly be smart if other leagues in North America followed this mandate, and while players may not love the move, it's one that has to be made.

Ultimately, the situation in England was an absolute tragedy, and one that no player or fan ever wants to see, so hopefully this mandate will help protect players in the future.
